== Das Recht, andere Software auf seinem Computer zu installieren ==
Safecast ist ein globales Projekt, um Strahlungsdaten von überall auf der Welt zu erfassen und diese Informationen öffentlich bereitzustellen. Beim Start des Projekts nutzte Safecast angepasste Hardware in Kombination mit eigens geschriebener Software und einigen cleveren Kniffen, um es jedem zu ermöglichen, beim Projekt mitzuwirken. Dieser Einfallsreichtum, diese Fähigkeit, eine bestehende Technologie durch das Ersetzen oder Erweitern der bestehenden Software anzupassen, sollte in Zukunft durch Gesetze erlaubt und gefördert werden. Im Beispiel von Safecast hat sie glücklicherweise niemand davon abgehalten, innovativ zu sein.
Aber um unsere Sicherheit, Privatsphäre und Komfort zu erhöhen, brauchen wir alle die Möglichkeit, Programme, die wir täglich nutzen, zu installieren oder zu ersetzen. Auch wenn wir einfach nur ein anderes Programm auf unserem Laptop, Tablet, Mobiltelefon, Router, Fernseher, Auto oder anderem Gerät nutzen wollen.
Heute, am internationalen Tag gegen DRM, rufen die unterzeichnenden Organisationen die Legislative auf, das Recht auf Tüfteln für jeden zu sichern. Damit es jeder Eigentümerin eines Endgerätes erlaubt ist, Software auf besagtem Gerät zu ersetzen oder zu erweitern, und somit der Nutzer ermächtigt wird, sein Eigentum zu kontrollieren. Viele Hersteller versehen ihre Geräte heute mit zusätzlichen technologischen Einschränkungen, die die Eigentümer davon abhalten, ihr Gerät selbst oder durch Hilfe anderer anzupassen. Das kann zu einer Lizenzverletzung führen (wie bei den Lizenzen von Freier Software/Open Source Sofware, die dazu berechtigen, die Software zu jedem Zweck zu verwenden, zu verstehen, zu verbreiten und zu verbessern). Es ist eindeutig, dass jegliches Recht auf Tüfteln mit einer gesetzlichen Regelung einhergehen muss, die eine technologische Einschränkung ebendieses Rechts verhindert.
Um zu gewährleisten, dass Geräteeigentümer die Kontrolle über ihre eigene Technologie haben, fordern die folgenden Organisationen, dass jedem das Recht auf Tüfteln zugestanden wird und dass technologische Einschränkungen, die mit diesem Recht in Konflikt stehen, gesetzlich eingeschränkt werden.
