1. DRM.info-Plattform gestartet
Digitales Restriktionsmanagement (DRM) betrifft alle Anwender von digitaler Technologie. Gleichzeitig gibt es kaum einen kritischen Dialog darüber. Um dieses Thema anzusprechen, hat die FSFE mehrere Organisationen aus verschiedenen Bereichen wie Verbraucherrechte, Bibliotheken, digitale Rechte und Creative Commons angesprochen und gemeinsam mit ihnen DRM.info gestartet, eine Plattform, die eine bisher vermisste kritische Sicht auf dieses Thema ermöglicht.
Der Start dieser Plattform wurde von Protesten in verschiedenen Städten, u.a. Zürich und Göteborg, begleitet, welche von der FSFE organisiert wurden, um die Menschen zu informieren, dass sie zumindest teilweise ihre Kontrolle über die Geräte, die sie gekauft haben, an dritte abgeben müssen, damit DRM funktioniert.

2. Shane M. Coughlan und Maria Carli stellen sich vor
Shane Martin Coughlan hat seine Vollzeitarbeit für die FSFE als Projektkoordinator begonnen. Shane wurde in Dublin geboren und ging dann im Rahmen seiner weiteren Ausbildung nach England. Er schloss seine Ausbildung 2003 in Birmingham mit einem MA in International Studies (Globalisation and Governance) ab. Er kam zur FSFE, weil er glaubt, dass Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie der gesamten Gesellschaft zur Verfügung stehen sollte und die FSFE in einer guten Position ist, um auf dieses Ziel hinzuarbeiten.
Maria Luisa Carli arbeitet vom Oktober 2006 bis Juni 2007 als Praktikantin für die FSFE. Marilu wurde in Foligno (Italien) geboren. Sie schloss 2004 ihre Ausbildung in Handelsrecht ab und machte den MBA an der Universität von Perugia. Marilu kam zur FSFE, weil sie vom internationalen und motivierten Team und von der Begeisterung beeindruckt war, die diese Organisation treibt.
Beide arbeiten zusammen mit Georg Greve, dem Präsidenten der FSFE, im neuen Büro der FSFE in Zürich (Schweiz), das als die dritte Arbeitszentrale neben Düsseldorf und Göteborg eingerichtet wurde.
3. FSFE hilft bei der Befreiung der italienischen Postleitzahlen Datenbank
Nachdem die Postleitzahlen durch das Privatunternehmen Poste Italiane aktualisiert wurden, verschwand die offizielle Liste der Postleitzahlen, die bis dahin als komprimierte Textdateien auf der Webseite von Poste Italiane und dem Ministerium für Kommunikation zur Verfügung stand. Die Textdatei wurde verwendet, um Freie Software zu entwickeln, die in vielen kommerziellen Umgebungen nützlich war. Poste Italiane machte die neuen Postleitzahlen nur in proprietären Formaten (sogar verschlüsselt) und nur für proprietäre Software zugänglich, die nur auf einem bestimmten Betriebssystem oder über eine Suchfunktion im Web funktionieret.
Da Postleitzahlen nach italienischem Gesetz öffentliche Daten sind, half das italienische FSFE-Team den Entwicklern von Freier Software mit juristischer Sachkenntnis und Schutz bei der Wiedererstellung der Liste der Postleitzahlen mit einem Crwaler, einem Programm, das Webseiten automatisch abruft. Die FSFE unterstützt auch einen offenen Brief an das Ministerium für Kommunikation, in dem man fordert, die Liste der Postleitzahlen wie zuvor zu veröffentlichen.

4. FSFE auf der LWE in Utrecht (Niederlande) und London (UK)
Auf der LWE 2006 in Utrecht präsentierte Georg Greve, Präsident der FSFE, den strategischen Wert von Freier Software in Unternehmen als Teil eines Freie-Software-Seminars in Zusammenarbeit mit Harald Welte. Die Veranstaltung diente auch dazu, der Öffentlichkeit das "Scientific Education and Learning in Freedom" (SELF) Projekt vorzustellen.
Gareth Bowker und Rainer Kersten von der FSFE waren in London auf der LinuxWorld Expo vom 25. bis 26. Oktober mit einem Stand anwesend. Die Veranstaltung war sehr erfolgreich und erzeugte eine bedeutende Menge an Aufmerksamkeit für die Arbeit der FSFE in Europa - außerdem wurden viele mit der neuesten Mode von FSFE ausgestattet! Ein besonderer Dank geht auch an Richard Smedley und Simon Morris, die am Stand mitgeholfen haben.
5. Schwedisches FSFE-Team auf den Internet-Tagen in Stockholm (Schweden)
In der letzten Oktoberwoche fand der jährliche Internet-Tag der swedischen "II Foundation" in Stockholm statt, an dem die FSFE mit ihrem schwedischen Team teilnahm. Neben einem Stand mit Informationen über unsere Aktivitäten nahm Jonas Öberg, Vizepräsident der FSFE, auch an einer Podiumsdiskussion über offene Formate für Dokumente teil.
Das schwedische Team der FSFE war auch als einer der Empfänger des "II Foundation Stipendium" anwesend, das jedes Jahr während den Internet- Tagen vergeben wird. Das schwedische FSFE-Team erhielt das Stipendium, um die Aktivitäten des SELF-Projekts in Schweden zu ergänzen, insbesondere um mit Schulen in Schweden daran zu arbeiten, Unterricht auf der Basis von SELF-Material zu halten und um mehr Material von SELF in schwedischer Sprache verfügbar zu machen.
Henrik Sandklef von der FSFE erhielt auch ein Stipendium von der II Foundation. Seine Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Übersetzung von Benutzerhandbüchern und anderer Dokumentation für GnuPG ins schwedische.
