1. Schritte in Richtung GPLv3
Das weltweite Netzwerk der Free Software Foundations bereitet derzeit den nächsten Schritt in der Weiterentwicklung der GNU General Public License - der am meisten genutzten Lizenz in der Freien Software Welt - vor. Während es keine Zweifel gibt, dass die aktuelle Version (GPLv2) vor Gericht standhält und weltweit anwendbar ist, wird die GPLv3 auf Aspekte eingehen, welche zu der Zeit, als die GPLv2 geschrieben wurde, noch nicht so wichtig waren oder gar nicht existierten, wie z.B. Programme, die über das Internet genutzt werden. Andere Punkte, die wahrscheinlich von Interesse sein werden, sind Softwarepatente, Kompatibilität mit anderen Copyleft-Lizenzen, DRM (Digital Rights Management) und TCP (Trusted Computing Platform).
Die Free Software Foundation Europe wird so viel Zeit und Energie in dieses Projekt investieren, wie nötig sein wird, um die GPLv3 so mächtig und erfolgreich wie die GPLv2 zu machen.

2. Karsten Gerloff auf der Sommerakademie von ATTAC Deutschland
Karsten Gerloff wurde gebeten, einen Vortrag zur aktuellen Entwicklung innerhalb der World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) und der A2K (Access To Knowledge) auf der Sommerakademie von ATTAC Deutschland in Göttingen zu halten. Seine Vortrag war Teil eines Seminars über geistige Monopolrechte.
Karsten war auch zum Treffen der ATTAC Arbeitsgruppe "Knowledge Commons" eingeladen.
3. AFFS Generalversammlung
Am 13. August hatte die AFFS, eine assoziierte Organisation der FSFE aus Großbritannien, ihre Generalversammlung. Ciaran O'Riordan berichtete, was im Bezug auf die Patentierbarkeit von Software erreicht wurde, und wie weitere Schritte aussehen werden.
4. Infrastruktur
Da der August recht ruhig war und nicht viele Veranstaltungen geplant waren, arbeitete das FSFE-Team an der Verbesserung der Infrastruktur, um für die nächste arbeitsintensiven Monate vorbereitet zu sein.
Ein neuer Asterisk-Server erlaubt Voice-Over-IP-Verbindungen innerhalb des Teams, und die Neuorganisation der Mailing-Listen und der CVS/SVN- Repositories sollten helfen, die Kommunikation zu verbessern, was immer eine Herausforderung darstellt, wenn Menschen über ganz Europa verteilt sind.
Das Fellowship war ein weiteres Ziel von Verbesserungen: Während das derzeitige System gut und stabil arbeitet, ist die Zeit für die ersten Verbesserungen gekommen. Ein wichtiger Punkt ist die Umstellung der Portalseite www.fsfe.org von Plone auf ezPublish.
