= Tagesschau.de für den Einsatz Offener Standards ausgezeichnet =

Berlin, 30. März 2011 - Tagesschau.de, die Internetplattform der ARD, wird heute anlässlich des "Document Freedom Day" für den Einsatz Offener Standards ausgezeichnet. Die Auszeichnung verleihen die Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) und der Förderverein für eine Freie Informationelle Infrastruktur e.V. (FFII) dafür, dass die angebotenen Sendungen zusätzlich im offenen Videoformat "Ogg Theora" http://theora.org/ verfügbar sind.
In Berlin überreichen FSFE und FFII eine Urkunde sowie eine Torte mit der Aufschrift "rOgg On!" an Sven Bruns, Leiter der Technik von tagesschau.de. In Hamburg nimmt die stellvertretende Redaktionsleiterin von tagesschau.de Sabine Klein die DFD-Torte für die Redaktion entgegen.
"In einer Zeit, in der unfreie Videoformate noch dominieren, ist tagesschau.de ein Vorbild für andere Rundfunkanstalten, wie Nutzer ungehindert Zugang zu ihren Medien bekommen", sagt Matthias Kirschner, Deutschland-Koordinator der FSFE.
Ogg Theora ist ein offenes Videoformat, das, im Gegensatz zu patentierten Videoformaten, jeder Software-Hersteller einfach und ohne Lizenzpflicht unterstützen darf. So ist es auch für die Software-Nutzer möglich, ohne die Abhängigkeit von einem Hersteller auf den unterschiedlichsten Geräten Ogg Theora abzuspielen.
Stephan Uhlmann vom FFII Vorstand: "Aus Bequemlichkeit kann man einfach das gerade dominierende Format unterstützen, statt auf Offene Standards zu setzen. Diese Dominanz kommt jedoch mit Patenten daher, deren exklusive Kontrolle alternative Software-Lösungen und spätere Innovationen blockieren. Mit Offenen Standards dagegen können Anwender ihre Software frei wählen. Ganz gleich ob Apple, Microsoft oder GNU/Linux: die Videos von tagesschau.de werden immer abspielbar sein."
Ogg Theora wird von allen Abspielprogrammen in gängigen GNU/Linux-Distributionen unterstützt. Durch den VLC-Player können Ogg-Dateien auch unter Microsoft Windows und Apples Mac OS X abgespielt werden. Des Weiteren unterstützen viele moderne Webbrowser das Format direkt.
Auf tagesschau.de gibt es alle regulären Video-Beiträge als Ogg Theora. Auf tagesschau24 http://www.tagesschau.de/tagesschau24/ wird das Video mit dem neuen Web-Standard HTML5 direkt eingebunden. An anderen Stellen muss noch manuell auf "Download der Videodatei" und dann Format "Mittel (Ogg)" geklickt werden.
"Wir hoffen, dass zeitbald alle weiteren Multimediainhalte -- insbesondere die Mediathek und Live-Streams -- auch in einem Freien Format verfügbar seien werden. Außerdem würden wir uns über Ogg-Theora- oder WebM-Videos http://www.webmproject.org/ in den besseren Qualitätsstufen freuen", meint Matthias Kirschner.

== Über den Document Freedom Day ==
Der Document Freedom Day (DFD) ist ein weltweiter Aktionstag für freie Dokumtenformate und offene Standards. Er findet seit 2008 jährlich am letzten Mittwoch im März statt. In den vergangenen Jahren haben über 200 Teams von Freiwilligen in über 60 Ländern anderen Menschen den Wert von offenen Dokumentenformaten und offenen Standards vermittelt. Dieses Jahr wird die Städtepatenschaft für Berlin von der tarent AG und in Hamburg von inmedias.it GmbH übernommen.
