Oracle debería acordar poner MySQL en manos de un guardian independiente sin ánimo de lucro", propone la Free Software Foundation Europe. La comunidad del Software Libre podría desarrollar MySQL en todo su potencial, mientras que Oracle no tendría que preocuparse por que un competidor tomara el control del proyecto de la base de datos
"La competición en el mercado del software es muy importante porque promueve la innovación", dice Karsten Gerloff, Presidente de la Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). "El destino de un proyecto como MySQL no debiera depender de una única empresa"
Al apartar el asunto MySQL, esto posibilitaría a Oracle completar rápidamente la adquisición de Sun Microsystems y evitar más pérdidas.

MySQL es el principal escollo de la adquisición de Sun Microsystems por Oracle. Con éste acuerdo, el mayor fabricante de bases de datos privativas (no libres) ganaría el control sobre MySQL, un gran proyecto de base de datos de Software Libre. La Comisión Europea está hasta el momento declinando aprobar el acuerdo porque le preocupan sus efectos sobre la competencia. Al mismo tiempo, Sun está perdiendo rápidamente dinero y está eliminando puestos de trabajo.
