La Free Software Foundation Europe apprende dalla stampa che Bill Gates, nella sua tourneé milanese, si è espresso contro il protezionismo che non gioverebbe né ai consumatori né alle imprese, portando come esempio di successo liberista l'esplosione di Internet. Apprendiamo inoltre che, secondo Bill Gates, occorre stimolare i ragazzi a studiare le tecnologie per esserne padroni, come pure permettere la veicolazione delle informazioni per favorire l'innovazione.
Questi valori sono da sempre alla base del messaggio che la FSF e la FSFE hanno portato avanti nel tempo con forza e convinzione, tra varie difficoltà ed epliciti ostracismi della cosiddetta "industria del software".
Siamo estremamente lieti che finalmente anche Bill Gates si faccia promotore del nostro messaggio.
Purtroppo, però, dobbiamo constatare che dietro le sue parole non è cambiato nulla e Microsoft punta, come in passato, a controllare sempre più da vicino le persone e le istituzioni. L'idea di formazione tecnica propugnata da Microsoft è quella dell'utente passivo del Sistema Operativo Unico (il suo), suggellata da accordi quadro con vari ministeri, tra cui quello dell'istruzione, dell'università e della ricerca [1]. Il protezionismo viene cercato continuamente e tenacemente tramite una politica aggressiva di brevettazione delle idee astratte e di potente lobby per rendere tali brevetti legali anche in Europa, dove invece sono ora esplicitamente vietati dalla Convenzione Europea sui Brevetti. Inoltre Microsoft coltiva i propri abusi di posizione dominante bollando l'organismo dell'antitrust come "nemico" e comprando il silenzio degli altri attori del mercato [2]. Internet, grande successo del software libero, dell'interoperabilità e della standardizzazione, viene violentata da Microsoft tramite modifiche anticompetitive di protocolli standard, per poi intonare piagnistei [3] a proposito di "anni di ricerca ed enormi investimenti" quando le autorità le chiedono di rispettare minimi requisiti di interoperablità, così vilmente calpestati.
L'innovazione, intanto, viene lasciata fare agli altri. Le nuove tecnologie, come il wifi, l'optoelettronica, l'intelligenza artificiale o ancora le reti cellulari a larga banda non appaiono affatto nella tanto decantata relazione di Bill Gates al FuturShow, che altro non è stata se non la pubblicità del nuovo Grande Fratello di casa Microsoft, una scatola che potrà e dovrà erogare l'intrattenimento su misura (senza dimenticare la pubblicità su misura) per il rintronamento perfetto di ogni famiglia; il tutto probabilmente con l'aiuto di meccanismi cosiddetti "anti-contraffazione" per evitare di ricordare troppo a lungo il materiale audiovisivo e per impedire di dimenticare troppo presto la pubblicità perché questo chiede il mercato per il bene duraturo dell'umanità intera [4].
E l'Italia accoglie come un capo di stato una persona che miete dove non ha seminato e raccoglie dove non ha sparso [5] ringraziandolo per avergli donato le tavole della legge: una copia del "manuale per una perfetta dipendenza da Microsoft dell'imprenditore". Il rappresentante degli industriali inoltre gli suggerisce di stilare un "manuale della perfetta dipendenza da Microsoft della pubblica amministrazione", che sarà sicuramente apprezzato dai rapprensenti eletti della cittadinanza, forse ignorando che pochi minuti prima Bill ha appena ricevuto da tali rappresentanti la Carta Regionale dei Servizi della Lombardia su un piatto d'argento. Intanto tutta la stampa osanna Bill quando enuncia il dogma della necessità per "le imprese italiane, e in particolare le piccole e medie, di immergersi nel mondo delle nuove tecnologie. Altrimenti non potrebbero stare al passo con la pubblica amministrazione" [6].
Probabilmente il mondo non lo ha ancora capito, ma Bill Gates è il nuovo Messia, che resuscita le tecnologie obsolete [7], sana il divario digitale offrendo il pensiero unico anche all'Unesco [8] e ci offre l'unica vera via verso la Conoscenza: quella in cui saltare dalla sua finestra è del tutto equivalente a mangiare la sua minestra. Tutto ciò senza farci dimenticare che il maligno esiste, mostranadoci schermate blu e inveendo contro i timidi pinguini [9].

La Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) è una organizzazione non governativa senza fini di lucro che si dedica a tutti gli aspetti del Software Libero in Europa. L'accesso al software determina chi può far parte di una società digitale. Quindi la libertà di usare, copiare, modificare e redistribuire software, come descritto nella definizione di Software Libero, permette parità di partecipazione nell'era dell'informazione. Portare all'attenzione del pubblico questi temi, dare solide basi politiche e lagali al Software Libero e assicurare libertà alle persone supportando lo sviluppo di Software Libero, sono temi centrali per la FSFE, che è stata fondata nel 2001 come organizzazione sorella della Free Software Foundation statunitense.
