FSFE: "La libertà non ha prezzo, ma ha un costo!"
"Le Free Software Foundation hanno 20 anni di esperienza nella costruzione e nella difesa della libertà nella società dell'informazione, che si tratti di un personal computer o della Corte Europea del Lussemburgo, e siamo fieri dell'indipendenza e dell'integrità che abbiamo sempre avuto" dice Georg Greve, Presidente della Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), commentando l'accordo tra Microsoft e la Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA).
Come riporta il Financial Times, Microsoft ha comprato il ritiro della CCIA dalla causa antitrust intentata dalla Commissione Europea presso la Corte Europea, tramite un pagamento di 20 milioni di dollari, metà dei quali pagati personalmente al presidente della CCIA Ed Black.
"Microsoft ha investito pià di 2.5 miliardi di dollari per comprare due cose da SUN, Novell e la CCIA: la libertà delle aziende e dei consumatori europei, e la capacità della Commissione Europea di portare avanti altre inchieste antitrust in futuro" continua Greve. "Queste aziende forse hanno aumentato momentaneamente la propria disponibilità finanziaria, ma hanno sacrificato importanti opportunità di mercato future". Alcuni esempi: l'home entertainment, i sistemi operativi per l'elettronica nelle autovetture e nei telefoni cellulari.
La Free Software Foundation Europe sottolinea che ad ogni giro della ruota diventerà sempre più difficile rompere il circolo vizioso: ogni tentativo fallito di regolamentazione antitrust darà a Microsoft più risorse per convincere le parti delle future cause antitrust a ritirarsi. Al contrario di CCIA, Novell e SUN, la Free Software Foundation Europe non può essere comprata e continuerà a sostenere la Commissione Europea nella causa.
"Coloro che vogliono vedere ripristinata la libertà di mercato devono sapere che ogni sostegno dato alla FSFE non potrà essere annullato da chi può fare maggiori offerte, come è successo con la CCIA. Questa indipendenza non ha prezzo, ma non è senza costi: la sola cosa che potrebbe fermarci è la mancanza di risorse dovuta alla mancanza di sostegno", conclude Greve.
