Buon anno a tutti. L'ultimo mese del 2007 è stato piuttosto emozionante, con la grande notizia della rivelazione delle informazioni per l'interoperabilità, da partedi Microsoft, in riferimento al caso antitrust europeo. Il progetto SAMBA ha raggiunto il pieno accesso alle specifiche necessarie per i prodotti comunicativi concorrenziali e alternativi ai prodotti proprietari di Microsoft. Ovviamente, questo non significa che il problema del comportamento monopolistico di Microsoft sia stato risolto. Un nuovo caso antitrust potrebbe essere avviato in seguito alle lamentele di Opera Software sul fatto che Microsoft abbia volontariamente distorto il mercato dei browser web. È importante notare che questo non risolve in nessun modo il problema dei brevetti software. Tali brevetti vengono ancora concessi dall'Ufficio Brevetti Europeo (EPO) in violazione dell'attuale legge, e la FSFE sta incoraggiando la Commissione Europea ad intervenire per abolire per sempre i brevetti sul software, sia in teoria che in pratica.
Nelle altre notizie, Google si è impegnata a sostenere la Freedom Task Force di FSFE nell'aiutare le persone a comprendere le licenze del Software Libero. Gli eventi relativi al Software Libero in Scandinavia e nei Balcani mostrano il continuo diffondersi della tecnologia e dei valori del Software Libero in tutta Europa, mentre in Germania sono state espresse preoccupazioni sul controllo delle informazioni e sulla data retention. Sembra che avremo un 2008 molto impegnato! 1. MS vs EU - Microsoft rilascia a SAMBA le informazioni per l'interoperabilità
Nel 2004 la Commissione Europea ha dichiarato Microsoft colpevole di abuso di posizione dominante nel mercato dell'IT, richiedendo che fossero rivelate ai concorrenti informazioni complete per assicurare l'interoperabilità. Microsoft si è appellata contro questa decisione, che però è stata confermata pienamente a Settembre 2007 dal Tribunale di primo grado della Corte di Giustizia europea. La corte ha dichiarato Microsoft colpevole di ostruzione dell'interoperabilità e l'ha condannata a rivelare le informazioni necessarie a garantire l'interoperabilità.
Il Samba Team ha deciso di avvalersi di questo diritto stabilito dalle sentenze europee nei confronti di Microsoft. La Protocol Freedom Information Foundation (PFIF) ha richiesto le informazioni per l'interoperabilità di rete, pagando la quota una tantum di 10.000 Euro, e consentendo al Samba Team l'accesso completo alle importanti specifiche.
"Questo caso è chiuso e l'interoperabilità ha vinto. La Corte Europea ha chiarito che le informazioni di interoperabilità non possono essere tenute segrete; l'accordo dimostra che Microsoft non può in alcun modo continuare a ostacolare l'interoperabilità in questo contesto. Questo costituisce un requisito a cui tutti si dovranno adeguare d'ora in poi" sintetizza Georg Greve, presidente della Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE).

2. FSFE appoggia un nuovo caso antitrust
Opera Software ha presentato un reclamo formale contro il comportamento anticoncorrenziale di Microsoft nel mercato dei browser web e c'è quindi la possibilità che un nuovo caso antitrust su questo tema venga avviato dalla Commissione Europea. FSFE ha inviato una lettera al Commissario Europeo per la Concorrenza Neelie Kroes offrendo il suo supporto nel caso venga promossa un'indagine sulla base del reclamo.
"Sebbene Opera Software non produca Software Libero, condividiamo ampiamente il loro giudizio e le loro preoccupazioni a proposito dell'attuale situazione nel mercato dei browser per Internet", scrive il presidente di FSFE Georg Greve nella lettera e prosegue: "Alcuni dei browser di maggiore successo in questo mercato sono Software Libero o contengono grosse parti di Software Libero. Tra questi, Mozilla Firefox e Konqueror, un browser realizzato da KDE. Questi prodotti sono altamente innovativi e sono riconosciuti da tutti come più sicuri dell'applicazione dominante. Essi implementano in modo fedele i principali Standard Aperti internazionali che si riferiscono alla tecnologia dei browser."

3. Google sovvenziona la FTF
La Freedom Task Force di FSFE fornisce servizi di formazione, supporto e consulenza sulle licenze del Software Libero. Ci occupiamo di gestire una rete europea di esperti legali e di collaborare con gpl-violations.org nel risolvere i problemi legati alle licenze. Fondamentalmente, la FTF contribuisce a realizzare un'infrastruttura che incoraggi l'adozione e l'uso corretto del Software Libero.
Recentemente Google ha fatto una donazione per aiutare la FTF a tenere corsi di formazione, partecipare a conferenze e tradurre la documentazione in più lingue. Come tutte le organizzazioni non governative abbiamo risorse limitate e l'aiuto di Google fa la differenza in modo significativo. Desideriamo ringraziare Chris e il resto del gruppo al Googleplex per credere in quello che facciamo e per permetterci di continuare questo lavoro.
4. La storia del Software Libero a Berlino
Il 13 Dicembre si è svolto un incontro della Fellowship locale a Berlino. Oltre a una ventina di persone di Berlino, nella stanza c'erano anche ospiti da fuori città: Georg Greve (il Presidente di FSFE) e Bernhard Reiter (il coordinatore tedesco di FSFE). Tra tè, panpepato e altri dolci (più la birra) si è parlato dell'inizio di FSFE, di come i presenti si sono avvicinati al Software Libero, e altre belle storie, divertenti e interessanti, che ben si adattavano al clima prenatalizio.

5. FScons
A Dicembre quasi 200 persone hanno partecipato a FSCONS (la Conferenza del Software Libero in Scandinavia). Nel corso dei due giorni i partecipanti hanno potuto ascoltare interventi sulle licenze del Software Libero e sul Software Libero nei dispositivi embedded. FSCONS è stata organizzata da FSFE, e diventerà un appuntamento annuale volto a raccogliere le persone dei paesi nordici.
6. L'incontro sulla privacy di privatsphaere.org
"I cittadini dovrebbero controllare il governo invece che il governo i cittadini!" è stato lo spontaneo grido di protesta di coloro che hanno partecipato a un evento chiamato privatsphaere.org - un'iniziativa congiunta di UUGRN.org, del "Laboratory for Dependable Distributed Systems University of Mannheim" e di FSFE. Dopo sei interventi che hanno affrontato da diverse prospettive la direttiva europea sulla data retention, la tedesca "indagine online" e la tessera sanitaria elettronica, circa 80 persone del pubblico sono convenute sul fatto che la costruzione di "montagne "di dati" non servirà a prevenire il terrorismo in Europa ma causerà ulteriori problemi all'intera società. Un partecipante ha chiesto: "Dove sono tutti i giornalisti locali, gli avvocati, i consulenti fiscali e i medici? Avrebbero dovuto partecipare a questo grande evento!" Tre relatori hanno più volte raccomandato l'uso del Software Libero per potersi assicurare un minimo di privacy, e FSFE ha fatto notare che la gente dovrebbe essere prudente nel consegnare informazioni personali agli archivi.
7. Sessione della STACS a Belgrado
Il 4 Dicembre a Belgrado, FSFE ha ospitato una sessione del progetto STACS. Rappresentanti locali e europei della società civile hanno preso parte a seminari e discussioni, e hanno collaborato alla realizzazione di interessanti progetti destinati a un futuro sviluppo.

8. Il Ministro serbo della società dell'informazione si impegna per sforzi di localizzazione
Stando al sito ufficiale del Ministro serbo delle telecomunicazioni e della società dell'informazione, il ministro investirà nella localizzazione del Software Libero in Serbia per fornire soluzioni al settore pubblico e alle aziende. Le distribuzioni GNU/Linux Fedora e Ubuntu saranno localizzate insieme a GNOME, KDE, e ai prodotti Mozilla (Firefox e Thunderbird) e OpenOffice.org. Il lavoro sarà intrapreso in collaborazione con le università serbe. Sono attualmente in corso i primi contatti con i gruppi di localizzazione e con la comunità del Software Libero.
