Per quattro decenni la comunità del Software Libero ha lavorato per dare agli utenti il potere di controllare la tecnologia e per aiutare la nostra società a comprendere come il Software Libero contribuisce alla libertà, trasparenza e auto-determinazione.
Il 27 settembre, la comunità del Software Libero celebrerà il quarantesimo anniversario dall’annuncio del Progetto GNU. In Europa, il Progetto GNU verrà festeggiato in questo giorno con un Hacker Meeting a Bienna in Svizzera, al quale parteciperà, fra gli altri, il Presidente della Free Software Foundation Europe, Matthias Kirschner.
GNU è un sistema operativo creato interamente con Software Libero, che permette alle persone di usare, comprendere, adattare e condividere il software. Normalmente in combinazione al kernel Linux, GNU crea la spina dorsale dell’Internet e dà energia a milioni di server, desktop e dispositivi informatici integrati.
Oltre ai suoi progressi tecnici, GNU è stato un pioniere del concetto di "copyleft", meglio esemplificato dalla GNU General Public License (GPL).
GNU ha segnato l’inizio del movimento per la Libertà del Software. Ad oggi è un movimento ampio e globale la cui gamma di partecipanti, da piccole imprese locali a grandi compagnie internazionali, organizzazioni di società civile e migliaia di professionisti in tutto il mondo, lavorano per un mondo in cui le quattro libertà siano garantite: gli utenti sono liberi di usare il software e adattarlo alle proprie necessità e hanno la possibilità di capirlo e condividerlo. Questi diritti supportano altri diritti fondamentali come la libertà di parola, la libertà di stampa e la privacy.
Questo movimento provvede importati garanzie per la democrazia. Il Software Libero contribuisce all’interazione e al coinvolgimento di parti interessate e della nostra società in generale, dando potere alla gente di usare il software per creare soluzioni ai loro problemi, contribuendo alla creazione di sistemi affidabili, che permetta una tecnologia che ci sia utile piuttosto che una tecnologia che ci controlli.

* Citazioni da parte di membri rilevanti della comunità del software libero (se avete bisogno di contattarli, fatecelo sapere in modo che possiamo fornirvi i loro dettagli di contatto. Sono già al corrente di questo e hanno dato il loro consenso).
* Informazioni sul perché il Software Libero è essenziale per una società democratica.
