Un appello per la difesa della competitività sul mercato tecnologico europeo e contro i brevetti sul software. Lo firmano Free Software Foundation Europe, Associazione Software Libero, Italian Linux Society e Media Innovation Unit - Firenze Tecnologia, raccogliendo le adesioni dei Linux User Group e delle associazioni sensibili all'argomento.

verrà sottoposto all'attenzione di tutti gli eletti italiani al Parlamento Europeo e dei ministri Lucio Stanca (innovazione tecnologica), Claudio Scajola (attività produttive), Mario Landolfi (comunicazioni), Letizia Moratti (università e ricerca scientifica e tecnologica) e Giorgio La Malfa (politiche comunitarie).
Il documento è un'approfondita presentazione dei motivi per cui l'estensione della brevettabilità anche alle idee astratte (software e metodi commerciali in primis), così come vuole la direttiva europea adottata lo scorso 7 maggio, andrà a ledere il tessuto su cui si giocano concorrenza e progresso tecnologico nel vecchio continente. Un appello sollecito e dettagliato, dunque, quello proposto dalle realtà firmatarie, perché i rappresentanti italiani nelle istituzioni europee prendano una posizione di chiara contrarietà all'attuale tendenza legislativa comunitaria.
E per dare maggiore spessore alla richiesta, a corredo del testo vengono riportati «Approfondimenti e riferimenti» attraverso cui sono illustrate debolezze e mancanza di fondamenti della scelta per i brevetti software, i quali vanno «ad unico beneficio di poche grandi aziende, perlopiù non europee; adottare [la direttiva] significa mortificare, forse per sempre, le prospettive di sviluppo autonomo dell'Europa nel settore informatico».
