Il progetto YaCy ha rilasciato la versione 1.0 del suo motore di ricerca peer-to-peer, un software libero che ha un approccio radicalmente nuovo alla ricerca. YaCy non usa un server centrale: i risultati delle ricerche vengono invece da una rete di oltre 600 peer indipendenti.
Il motore di ricerca YaCy è in esecuzione sul computer di ogni utente. I termini usati nelle ricerche vengono crittografati prima che escano dal computer dell'utente. Diversamente dai motori di ricerca tradizionali, YaCy è progettato per proteggere la privacy degli utenti. Il computer di un utente crea i suoi indici e classifiche di ricerca individuali, così che nel tempo i risultati corrispondano sempre meglio a quello che l'utente sta cercando. YaCy permette anche di creare facilmente e in pochi clic un portale di ricerca personalizzato.
"Gran parte di quel che facciamo su Internet richiede una ricerca. È il collegamento indispensabile tra noi e l'informazione che stiamo cercando. Per un compito così importante non possiamo affidarci a poche grandi aziende, compromettendo inoltre la nostra privacy," dice Michael Christen, project leader di YaCy. "La ricerca libera di YaCy è il collegamento decisivo tra utenti liberi e informazione libera. YaCy restituisce il controllo della ricerca a noi, gli utenti."
Ogni utente YaCy è parte di una grande rete di ricerca. YaCy è già in funzione in siti web come sciencenet.kit.edu, yacy.geocaching-portal.com e fsfe.org, per offrire una funzione di ricerca su tutto il sito che rispetti la privacy degli utenti. Contiene un protocollo di rete peer-to-peer che scambia gli indici di ricerca con gli altri motori di ricerca YaCy.
"Ci stiamo allontanando dall'idea che i servizi debbano essere controllati centralmente. Ci stiamo invece rendendo conto di quanto sia importante essere indipendenti e creare un'infrastruttura che non abbia un singolo punto di vulnerabilità," dice Karsten Gerloff, Presidente della Free Software Foundation Europe. "Nell'era futura dei sistemi distribuiti e peer-to-peer i motori di ricerca liberi come YaCy sono un elemento basilare indispensabile."
Chiunque può provare il motore di ricerca su http://search.yacy.net. Gli utenti possono diventare parte della rete di YaCy installando il software sui propri computer. YaCy è Software Libero, quindi chiunque può usarlo, studiarlo, condividerlo e migliorarlo. Attualmente è disponibile per GNU/Linux, Windows e MacOS. Il progetto cerca sviluppatori e altri collaboratori.
