Hi all,
first I'd like to thank all of you who have provided input and
feedback. I have tried to incorporate it as well as I could also based
on some communication by me and Nicola Bernardini with an EU official.
I have subscribed everybody who participated in the communication to
the fp6ip(a)fsfeurope.org mailing list, which will probably be only
temporary. If you wish to (un)subscribe, the interface can be found at
https://mailman.fsfeurope.org/mailman/fp6ip
In general, we are facing the problem that the funding structures of
the EU are not very well-suited for Free Software. Also we should
understand that the Expressions of Interest should not be too focused
on what we think the structure will be, but rather on what we think
the structure should be.
Therefore I have added some part explaining a few of the difficulties
incorporating Free Software into FP6.
The problem being, that the document should really get shorter, not
longer. The official guidelines say something about 5 pages, which
means we should get rid of 1-2 pages.
I'm not sure how strict this is, though, and given the extraordinary
situation of Free Software I'm considering to keep it like this. We
have to remind ourselves that it is a preliminary consultation period,
IMPORTANT:
* We want more partners. Especially research institutes and
Universities would be very useful to have. So please try to make
contacts!
* Some of the people announcing their support have not yet submitted
a subscription of their party.
If you find yourself in the list of "might be interested" parties
although you have already sent mail telling me that you do support
it - this is the reason.
If someone is interested, please tell them to write a mail containing
something like: "[We] support the Expression of Interest for the
Integrated Project and would like to be added to the list. Here is our
brief description:..." to president(a)fsfeurope.org.
Okay, we need to finish this by the end of the month. No time to keep
it in your inbox too long!
Regards and thanks,
Georg Greve

Dear all,
again with the help of preliminary work done by Nicola Bernardini and
after some suggestions of Marc Eberhard, I worked on a first draft for
an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the 6th framework programme (FP6)
of the European Union for an "Integrated Project" (IP).
Time is of the essence. This document must be very much final by the
end of the week.
I'm appending the first draft version in both LaTeX and PDF format, so
you can print it out or send me patches with suggestions right away. I
will try to reiterate it based on the feedback. Also I will try to
reiterate the document(s) with the feedback Nicola received from
Mr. Philippe Aigrain.
For now, the most important question is who we want to be in this EOI.
I have made several suggestions, but of course these companies,
associations and research institutes *must* tell me themselves
officially that they want to get involved. That is also true for our
associate organizations.
So please make sure that these companies see the document and take
care of it immediately.
Also if you know other partners (companies, research institutes,
associations) that should be involved in this, please do not hesitate
to get them in touch with me.
There is no time to let this sit in your incoming mail folder.
Everyone should know that this needs to be dealt with now.
Regards,
Georg

Dear all,
also thanks to some preliminary work of and discussion with Nicola
Bernardini I finally found time to prepare some Expression of Interest
(EOI) for the 6th framework programme (FP6) of the European Union for
a "Network of Excellence."
Time is of the essence. This document (and its sister document for an
"Integrated Project") must be final by the end of the week.
I'm appending the first draft version in both LaTeX and PDF format, so
you can print it out or send me patches with suggestions right away. I
will try to reiterate it based on the feedback.

I have made several suggestions, but of course these companies,
associations and research institutes *must* tell me themselves
officially that they want to get involved. That is also true for our
associate organizations.
So if this is something that is relevant to you, please take care of
it immediately.

Hi all,
the LinuxTag in Karlsruhe is approaching fast and our booth coordation
volunteer, Volker Dormeyer, needs to know who (or at least how many)
is coming from which country/association in order to organize the
timetables for the booth, give specifics about demand of space and
organize for sleeping places for those who need them.
This is a lot of work and we should try to make it as easy for him as
we can!
Therefore I just created a new mailing list for booth coordination
purposes,
booth(a)fsfeurope.org
with a web interface at
http://mailman.fsfeurope.org/mailman/listinfo/booth
which is administrated by Volker.
This list will be dealing with all the practical issues of organizing
booths for the various tradeshows throughout Europe.
Would someone from every associate organization (ideally those who
plan to/think about coming to Karlsruhe) please subscribe to that list
and let Volker know what he needs to know to organize the booth?
Regards,
Georg
P.S. A few more thoughts about booth(a)fsfeurope.org:
Since it will probably see occasionally high traffic, I suggest we do
not have volunteers permanently subscribed to it, it probably makes
more sense to have an additional booth-volunteers list, on wich
volunteers would only receive calls for volunteers so they can
subscribe to booth whenever they want to get involved in a specific
event.
Still: I would like to ask at least 1-2 people from each of our
associated organizations to remain permanently subscribed to booth
just in case and to remain on top of the issues.
