DRM.info: Informerar om farorna med att kontrollera privat användning av media
Tidigt i morse lanserade en grupp av samverkande organisationer och författare webbplatsen DRM.info, [1] en gemensam informationsplattform om de potentiella farorna med Digital Restriction Management (DRM). Samarbetet leds av Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE).
"'Dina tekniska prylar litar inte på dig!' är den grundläggande meningen med DRM. Faktiskt så litar de på dig så lite att de inte ens berättar att de vill övervaka dig," säger Joachim Jakobs, FSFE's mediakoordinator. "SONYs så kallade rootkit installerade programvara på användarens dator i hemlighet och rapporterade tillbaka till SONY. Vid försök att ta bort programmet riskerade det att förstöra användarens Windows-installation." [2]
Givet de politiska implikationerna med att sätta användarna av datorer, mediaspelare, mobiltelefoner och andra tekniska enheter under tillverkarnas kontroll så är det inte konstigt att många skulle föredra att ingen någonsin fick reda på DRM: en av cheferna på Disney berättare för tidningen The Economist för ett år sedan: "Om konsumenterna bara visste om att det finns DRM, vad det är och hur det fungerar, så skulle vi redan ha förlorat." I kontrast med detta så är DRM.info grundad på iden att människor ska vara informerade och involverade i beslut som påverkar dem själva på en väldigt personlig nivå.
"DRM-tekniker är baserade på principen att en tredje part har större inflytande över dina tekniska enheter än du själv, och att det är deras intressen som kommer att väga tyngre än dina när det uppstår en konflikt. Detsamma gäller när dina intressen är fullt legitima och legala, och eventuellt också för din egen information", förklarar Georg Greve, ordförande för FSFE.
Bibliotek är också oroade över vilken inverkan DRM kommer att ha på deras möjlighet att bevara det kulturella arvet, att erbjuda tillgång till kulturella verk i framtiden och utnyttja människors egna rättigheter enligt upphovsrättslagen. "Bibliotek ser DRM som ett hot mot vår verksamhet eftersom det kan underminera och till och med hindra legitim tillgång till och användning av digital information", säger Teresa Heckett, eiFL.net. "Vi välkomnar DRM.info som en plattform för publik debatt kring dessa viktiga frågor för samhället."

Om DRM.info
DRM.info är ett samarbete mellan flera oberoende organisationer och personer.
