I am not even going to try to defend Paypal, I know the horror stories, 
but FWIW the Freenet Project has been using them for donations for over 
two years and have not experienced any problems.

Another option is E-Gold (http://e-gold.com/).  They are much more 
philosophically attractive than Paypal, but much less user-friendly.
