Reported today on the C4(hampering)C website:

http://europeansoftwarepatents.blogspot.com/

Commission gives a parliamentary answer very much in favour of patents
for software (making a new contribution) running on a standalone computer.

Includes this quote:

"One of the studies conducted in the context of the Commission’s
analysis, taking account of the situation in the United States, found
that the patentability of computer program related inventions has helped
the growth of computer program related industries in the United States,
in particular the growth of SMEs and independent software developers
into sizable indeed major companies."

Presumably this was the IPI report the Commission ordered, with this
conclusion famously written in by the two IP-lawyers, based on no
research whatsever, over the head of the economist who wrote the
economics section ??

Unfortunate (but sadly perhaps not unexpected) to see Brian Crowley
throwing such a soft ball question for McCreevy's civil servants to take
advantage of.
