PRESSEMITTEILUNG
Do, 3. November 2022
PRESS RELEASE
Thu, November 3, 2022
GNU/Linux.ch launches a campaign together with FSFE-Switzerland to encourage
public institutions to communicate sovereignly.
Social networks are becoming more and more important for public bodies and
institutions as well. They enable a direct communication with citizens and allow
a timely publication of information relevant for the population.
In most cases, well-known commercial platforms such as Twitter, Facebook,
YouTube or TikTok are used. People who want to use the Internet in a self-
determined and privacy-friendly way are excluded from this. Through prominent
linking and the use of the commercial services, advertising is also indirectly
made for the large corporations, which could encourage more citizens to use the
corresponding services.
However, alternatives such as Fediverse already exist today and are enjoying
growing popularity, for example with many federal authorities in Germany. This
is a network of different applications such as Mastodon, which communicate with
each other via a common protocol. Users have the option of operating their own
instance or joining existing instances.
This results in an independent and self-determined use and design of digital
technologies and forms the cornerstone for our democracy in an increasingly
digitalized society. Citizens are not forced to pass on their data to large
corporations in order to be able to communicate with public institutions.
With the FediGov campaign, FSFE Switzerland and GNU/Linux.ch want to raise
awareness of the issue and offer both citizens and public authorities direct
opportunities for action. Interested parties can use a template to send a letter
to public authorities to motivate them to also be represented in Fediverse.
Public institutions are given assistance in dealing with decentralized social
networks based on Free Software.

Hello Team
We are happy to announce a joined initiative of FSFE-Switzerland and
GNU/Linux.ch called FediGov: https://fedigov.ch/en/
The initiative strives to foster public communication for authorities and public
institutions in the Fediverse. Citizens should be empowered to participate in
public communication without proprietary services. Some authorities already
complemented their communication channels with Fediverse services like Mastodon,
but not enough.
We believe that it is the right time to start this initiative because of the
recent changes at Twitter. The initiatives consist mainly of the website and
press releases. The website explains reasons why authorities should add services
from the Fediverse to their existing communication channels. Moreover, it
contains a prepared letter (and E-mail) that can be sent to authorities. Since
Switzerland is a multilingual country, we provide four languages on the page:
German, English, Italian and French.
All FSFE local groups are encouraged to follow our initiative. The code of the
website is available at https://codeberg.org/ralfhersel/fedigov and can be
easily forked and adapted to the needs of your local group. We are happy to help
you with starting a similar initiative in your country.
Best regards
Ralf Hersel and the Swiss FSFE Team

Was fehlt, sind:
- Die Übersetzungen (EN, IT, FR)

It has been almost a year since I joined your Stammtisch on the 9th of
September a year ago to learn about your experiences with 'Lernen wie
die Profis'. https://wiki.fsfe.org/Events/Zurich/2021-09-09
In the mean time our Dutch community has steadily making progress:
- We formalized the coaltion and launched a petition:
https://fsfe.org/news/2022/news-20220520-01.en.html
- The group presented already twice on the efforts, the most resent one
at MCH Hacker Camp:
https://media.ccc.de/v/mch2022-314-free-children-from-the-digital-strangleh…
Yesterday evening we had a videocall with representatives of other
international organizations on the topic of education IT:
- https://unsere-digitale.schule/
We agreed to stay in touch to share solutions and experiences to
strengthen each others efforts. From the NL coalition we'll probably
send a representative to that online meeting as it would be too much of
a burden on the team if everybody would be expected to join.
And of course I really hope you might be up for this as well, to have
somebody join this effort and to relay from and to the Lernen wie die
Profis effort.
If you are up for this, please send me the email addresses I should
include in the invites for these international meetings.
The first of these meetings will be the 28th of September.
We created an international Matrix channel this morning to communicate:
https://matrix.to/#/#EU_CFDE:matrix.org
Let me list the communication channels of our Dutch group as well:
- Mailinglist: https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/cedo-nl
- Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#CEDO:matrix.org
I hope some of you find the time to join and join the effort.
Best,
Nico
